Richmond’s Hidden Gem: Discover the Linden Row Inn

October 2, 2023

Steeped in history and teeming with elegance, Richmond, Virginia, is a city that mesmerizes all who visit. My husband and I recently visited the charming city to explore the area in the fall. At the heart of this enchanting city lies a gem that perfectly encapsulates its rich heritage – the Linden Row Inn. The hotel is a living, breathing chapter of Richmond’s past where you can walk in the footsteps of literary legends and bask in the grandeur of the 19th century. In this blog post, I’ll share the hotel’s history, accommodations, and location that places it a stone’s throw away from some of Richmond’s most significant landmarks. Whether you’re a history buff, an avid traveler, or just someone in search of a unique lodging experience in Virginia’s capitol, the Linden Row Inn promises a wonderful stay.

The combination of old-world charm with modern luxuries and a fantastic location make this 70-room boutique historic hotel a delightful experience. It’s conveniently located at First & Franklin Streets, minutes away from all major attractions in the capital area.

The Rich History of Linden Row Inn

Despite the meticulous preservation of the original architecture, the Linden Row Inn seamlessly incorporates modern amenities, creating a harmonious blend of old-world charm and contemporary comfort. The hotel is comprised of seven row houses built in the mid-1800’s that have been meticulously restored over the years. The guest rooms and parlour suites are furnished with antiques from the middle and late 1800’s, which add an elegant charm to the decor. Linden Row Inn is proud to be featured on the National Register of Historic Places.

Besides the architecture itself, the hotel has a a storied history. The most compelling tale, perhaps, is the connection to esteemed American author Edgar Allan Poe. (One of my favorites!) Born and raised in Richmond, Poe is said to have courted his first love, Elmira Royster, in the enchanting garden which has been turned into the courtyard of the hotel. This particular garden is believed to have inspired Poe’s famous poem, ‘To Helen’.

Accommodation at Linden Row Inn

There are several elegant accommodations to choose from, a Parlour Room, Main House Room or a Garden Room. Each option provides a unique experience.

All of the rooms are elegantly decorated with period pieces and have spa-like granite bathrooms. There are only seven Parlour rooms that are all unique, and in my opinion, they are the most fabulous for a luxury stay at this charming hotel. Each has an exquisitely decorated parlour area. It’s a delightful throwback to the 1840s, complete with a Rococo Revival parlor suite, oil paintings, and marble mantels. The Garden Rooms are located in one of the two original carriage houses with direct access to the courtyard. These rooms are cozy with light and airy interiors. The Main House Rooms are part of the seven connected row houses with gorgeous 12 foot ceilings and access to the veranda.

My husband and I stayed in a Main House Room. The moment you walk through the door, the high ceilings and size of the room is incredible. We had a beautiful view of Franklin Street from the windows. It reminded me of the charming hotel we stayed in when we visited Colmar, France.

Along with the accommodations, the staff was so friendly. Especially Annabelle – the sweet lobby cat! She greeted us every time we walked through the lobby. 🙂

Its prime location places guests just a short drive away from main attractions in Richmond. You can visit the Edgar Allan Poe Museum, where they can explore the life and works of the renowned poet and writer, go shopping in Carrytown, and get outdoors in nearby parks like Belle Isle.

When it comes to dining, Perly’s, a beloved local deli and restaurant, is right around the corner, enticing visitors with its delicious Jewish-inspired cuisine. My husband and I had breakfast there and it was worth the 45 minutes wait. If you visit, you have to try the Jewish eggrolls. We devoured them.
